Why it shouldn’t win the Oscar for best picture.
The film is decent enough, and I do like my Boyle movies (well, most of them). The whole feels a bit forced though IMHO. Most characters seem lacking in their motivations to the point of annoyance, plus I really really dislike “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”, which might have colored my opinion.
Also, hearing that most of the younger cast was given a pittance and continue to live in slums (while the older, English cast are heralded on every show available, on their way to mega-bucks), makes me slightly sick of the whole endeavour. Especially after hearing the excuses Boyle & Co come up with for why negotiating with illiterates and stiffing them out of a fair industry comparable pay is actually a good thing for them. Let’s hope the lawsuit has some traction and the child actors get a fairer share of the action.
